When it comes to healing our bodies, we often think of traditional medical treatments like medication and surgery. However, there are many holistic approaches to healing like herbal medicine, holistic doctors, or alternative practices that can be just as effective, if not more so. One of the most powerful ways to heal yourself is through intentional diet, nutrition, and mindfulness.
What is Holistic Healing?
Holistic healing involves focusing on a person’s health holistically, which means as a whole, rather than focusing on and treating a particular health concern. Usually, when you go into a medical doctor’s office, you’re given treatment in the form of Western medicine, or “conventional medicine” which is based on a certain health condition or disease you may have. That may involve prescribing medication or other medical practices like physical therapy.
On the other hand, holistic healing is usually practiced by holistic doctors or naturopathic doctors, and they use holistic medicine, alternative medicine, alternative therapies, complementary therapies, and even massage therapy or chiropractic care to give you a whole sense of well-being. Holistic healers may still use conventional medicine or physical therapy to treat a patient’s ailments, but their primary focus is to restore balance in life and in your entire body and get you to optimal health in mind, body, and spirit.
Sometimes that also means engaging you in holistic healing practices, like taking herbal medicine, energy healing, utilizing Chinese medicine, or even getting spiritual counseling. That sounds like a lot of different treatment methods, but it’s way more simple than that, at the core, it all starts and ends with diet, nutrition, and mindfulness.
How Diet Plays A Role in Holistically Healing Yourself
Diet is the foundation of our physical health. It is the fuel that our bodies use to function, and it can either nourish us or harm us. Eating a diet that is high in whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help to prevent chronic diseases and improve overall health. On the other hand, a diet that is high in processed foods, sugar, and commercial (heat-processed) vegetable oils can contribute to chronic health conditions like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
Choosing a whole-food diet gives your body the key nutrients and minerals that it will need to increase the healing power of your body while providing numerous benefits to one’s health. When you’re on a diet that is constantly giving your body the fuel it needs, it performs better, which helps you perform better as well. A diet that is full of foods that are processed or not good for you can decrease your body’s ability to heal itself because your body is not receiving the key nutrients it needs to sustain itself, let alone heal itself.
How Nutrition Plays a Role in Holistically Healing Yourself
Nutrition is another important aspect of holistic healing. It is the science of how our bodies use the nutrients in the food we eat to maintain and repair themselves. By making sure we are getting all the essential nutrients our body needs through a balanced diet, we can improve our overall health and well-being. This can include taking supplements to support deficiencies and also targeted nutrients that support specific health goals.
Knowing more about the key nutrients you need to consume to help your body perform at its best and increase its healing power is key to holistically healing yourself. Even though they go hand-in-hand, diet and nutrition are a bit different in that you need to have the knowledge of nutrition to know what diet is best for your health. For example, you may be able to get the daily value of vitamin B by eating a serving of broccoli, but you may need to take a specific supplement to get the daily value of vitamin B12 since the amount of vitamin B12 that you need in a day isn’t in any plant food that you can ingest. You also may not be able to break down foods digestively to extract and absorb certain nutrients like B12. Knowing that is knowing the science of nutrition, which will help you choose the right whole-food diet and supplements to get you to optimal health.
How Mindfulness Plays a Role in Holistically Healing Yourself
Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and paying attention to our thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. It has been shown to be effective in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, and improving overall well-being. Mindfulness can be practiced through meditation, yoga, or other forms of self-reflection. Mindfulness doesn’t always have to be spiritual, it can just be paying attention to ourselves in each present moment, instead of thinking of the past or future. By being mindful of our thoughts and feelings, we can gain insight into our emotional and physical health, and make positive changes in our lives.
A good example of being mindful and paying attention to our thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations would be examining how we feel after we eat a meal. After all, all of our bodies are different and no diet plan is one-size-fits-all. A diet that may work for someone else, may not work for you, and the only way to know that is by being mindful of how you feel after you eat a meal. After you eat a meal, be mindful of how it makes you feel. Are you more energized? Are you more groggy or fatigued? Do you have stomach pain? Some foods may sit better with you, your stomach, and your body than other foods, and it’s important to identify what diet works best for you to improve your lifestyle and well-being in the long term.
Another example would be to pay attention to how you feel after physical activity. Do you feel lightheaded? It may be linked to your blood pressure, and we may need to get you tested for that. Do you have physical pain or even chronic pain? You may be pinching a nerve or overusing a muscle, and we may need to get you into integrative therapy with a physical therapist or chiropractor to address that ailment.
Conversely, you may have decreased self-esteem when you’re around a particular person, and you won’t be able to identify where that feeling is coming from if you aren’t being mindful and paying attention to your thoughts and feelings when you’re around that person. You may need to cut contact with that person to improve your mental health and anxiety. Having a strong relationship with mindfulness is one of the keys to holistically healing yourself.
Neuro Emotional Technique
In addition to utilizing mindfulness in order to holistically heal yourself, utilizing NET (Neuro Emotional Technique) may also be a good option to consider. Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) is by far the most scientifically proven technique for changing the brain and subconscious patterning, as well as the farthest-reaching process in its scope of transforming the body and mind. Its basis is to find and remove emotional physio-pathological patterns, which are called Neuro Emotional Complexes (NECs).
With NET, you can actually release old belief patterns that are causing emotional and physical distress. If you’re interested in learning more about NET, the background concepts, and dynamics, feel free to book a 15-min consultation with me.

You know your body best, especially if you’re practicing mindfulness. However, It’s never a bad idea to consult a certified doctor who works in holistic medicine, integrative medicine, alternative medicine, or other un-conventional therapies for validation purposes and to ensure that you’re taking the right steps toward your optimal health.
Healing oneself holistically through diet, nutrition, and mindfulness can be very effective. These holistic healing practices and holistic healing techniques are a great way to improve overall health, lifestyle quality, and well-being and reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
