What Is A Holistic Nutritionist?

My introduction to the practice of holistic health and holistic nutrition began in my early adulthood with life-changing chiropractic care and nutrition advice that restored my own health and vitality. The profound results inspired me to pursue a Ph.D. in nutrition where I studied the impact of diet and toxicity in the body, brain, and nervous system.

Through receiving my Ph.D., I was able to immerse myself in my passion for nutrition with over three decades of study and resources amongst extraordinary doctors and mentors, and eventually help individuals who were struggling with underlying dis-ease and emotional disharmony. I use a unique blend of Clinical and Holistic Nutrition healing modalities to help my patients achieve optimal health and vitality. One of the requirements for having a career in nutrition is being certified in nutrition. To learn more about what it is to be a holistic nutritionist and what you can gain from having one, read on!

What Is A Holistic Nutritionist?

What Is A Holistic Nutritionist? - Dr. Mary Lou Rane

Before seeking help from a holistic nutritionist, you may ask: What are holistic nutritionists, and what do they do? How can a holistic nutritionist help me?

A holistic nutritionist is a specialized nutritionist that takes a natural approach to health compared to conventional medical professionals. A holistic nutrition expert will never advise you to just “eat healthy food,” or introduce a generic meal plan to you. They help you identify how your diet and mental health may be impacting your overall and physical health. Meaning, they consider you and your health as a whole when providing advice.

A holistic nutrition professional uses natural food and products to help heal patients. They are health professionals that genuinely care about your overall well-being and seek to get to the root cause of your health issues, which means always providing a safe space where individuals can really be heard without criticism.

Holistic nutrition experts aim to assist with diet modification and healthy lifestyle changes tailored specifically to each individual. The overall goal is to help you create a lifestyle that benefits your entire body, not just one aspect of your being. Taking a holistic approach is taking a whole-body approach (mind, body, soul) for your health & wellness.

Unlike conventional practices, holistic nutrition focuses on an individual’s unique nutritional needs and health conditions. This means taking into consideration any intolerances, deficiencies, or allergies that you may have, and figuring out what nutrients your body is lacking. Factors like how we eat, where we get our food from, and the environment we live in can greatly impact our health condition. Healthy eating is just one small factor of nutrition coaching.

Additionally, holistic nutrition focuses on educating individuals to make better lifestyle choices and create healthy habits so they have a greater hand in their own health and well-being. Imagine receiving a generic nutrition program and prognosis from a health professional that wasn’t tailored to you, your dietary needs, and your medical conditions. How are you supposed to treat your medical condition and achieve optimal health if your doctor or dietician is giving you a broad program that can be used by anyone, in any age range or sex?

Think of a holistic nutrition professional like a personal trainer who is rooting for a healthy and happy you by assisting you in making diet, lifestyle, and habit changes while treating your underlying disease. A certified nutrition professional can help you paint an accurate picture of your road to health & wellness with a wide range of treatments, products, and a personalized coaching program.

My Mission As A Certified Holistic Nutritionist

My Mission As A Certified Holistic Nutritionist - Dr. Mary Lou Rane

A question I always ask my clients after they tell me what is going on in their lives is:

“If you were free of your health problems and emotional challenges and had renewed vital energy, what would you be able to create and experience?”

The reason that I start with this question and continue to ask it during sessions is, we all have dreams and desires we feel we will never be able to achieve. Our fears, self-doubt, and limiting beliefs are the biggest challenges that we face in becoming fully realized! I believe a requirement for every nutritionist is empathy, compassion, and a complete understanding of life circumstances and limitations.

So many people suffer from chronic illness and weight gain due to the old paradigm that aging and dis-ease are beyond our control. In the new medicinal sciences emerging in the 21st century, achieving and sustaining health & wellness is no longer a mystery. Proactively asking the right questions about our health concerns and challenges allows us to find the answers and switch our approach from simply treating symptoms of dis-ease to actually getting to the underlying cause of dis-ease as an effective means of achieving optimal health. People who are given the same diagnosis can have completely different reasons for that condition. My goal is to find the underlying causes in order to support the body to adapt, be healthy and ward off any potentially dangerous pathogens and toxins.

My mission is to help my clients in the holistic nutrition industry achieve their health, emotional and spiritual goals through a combination of healing modalities, guidance, education, support, and most of all, unconditional love. I want to approach people and use a whole-person perspective and take environmental aspects into account. I want to help people discover new choices, options, and solutions to their challenges. One of my specialties is facilitating people in tracking and releasing unwanted beliefs and patterns and offering a new point of recognition of self and the power we hold inside.

My vision is to awaken people to the potential and innate wisdom everyone holds within; to celebrate an individual’s realization of a passionate, extraordinary, supportive life on all levels; and ultimately, to promote consciousness, compassion, and cooperation in the world.

I am dedicated to continuing my own healing and level of education in order to bring all that is available to each individual through the sessions I provide and the programs we implement together for self-improvement, self-empowerment, health & wellness, and freedom.

The Difference Between A Holistic Nutrition Professional And A Dietician

Most people don’t know the difference between a holistic nutritionist and a dietician. Although both health professionals in medical settings deal with nutrition and provide nutritional advice, their professional experience, and their school education are different. For example, most holistic nutrition experts go to a specialized nutrition school to reach the correct eligibility requirements in order to pursue a career in nutrition. With that being said, both nutritionists and dieticians are growing in value as the average growth rate for these occupations is to grow 11% from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations.

A holistic nutrition professional, more broadly known as a holistic healer, focuses on a personalized and holistic approach based on an individual’s lifestyle, health history, and biochemistry. On the other hand, dieticians are encouraged to follow guidelines and protocols designed for a broad group of health issues and people. Dieticians provide more general nutrition education for underlying diseases and weight gain. Holistic nutrition experts provide specified nutrition guidance that addresses personal goals and leads to the optimal health of the human body. As much as our expertise is based on nutrition, we also have expertise in life coaching. To read more about how a holistic nutritionist relates to a holistic life coach, click here!

Easily put, holistic nutritionists operate in a field of personalized health and nutrition to optimize health and holistic wellness, while dieticians tend to operate in the field of dietetics and what’s called medical nutrition therapy. Dietetics focuses on the science of nutrition in order to prevent certain health issues from arising, and medical nutrition therapy includes conducting tests and diagnosing medical conditions like diabetes or heart disease. Both holistic nutrition experts and dieticians use applied science in health & wellness to assist individuals to lead more balanced and meaningful lives.

Those who practice holistic nutrition are more likely to practice in clinical settings like wellness centers, a private practice, and health food stores, while dieticians are more likely to practice in larger institutional settings like hospitals, universities, or research-based environments.

How A Certified Holistic Nutritionist Can Help Change Your Life

How A Certified Holistic Nutritionist Can Change Your Life - Dr. Mary Lou Rane

Healing is what occurs when you change your perception and become conscious of a new reality. A certified nutrition professional such as myself can help you change your perception and create a game plan so you can create a new reality for YOU.

Most of my patients and clients come to me with specific symptoms that they want help with. In our work together we won’t just treat the symptom or condition, but rather we will find the root cause and resolve that. So if you have back pain or sleep issues or whatever, know that we’ll be looking at not just your body, but also your nutrition, your emotions, and your lifestyle as a whole.

First, for informational purposes and getting to know my patient, I use a wide range of different testing techniques to help my patients treat conditions ranging from Lupus and digestive discomfort to Alzheimer’s and Autism, to autoimmune disorders and hormone imbalances. Click here to see a full list of all the conditions I treat.

For example, Contact Reflex Analysis (CRA), Nutritional Response Testing (NRT), and Epigenetics Functional Biochemistry are all noninvasive and precise tests I suggest my patients take to help determine the most effective healing plan. NRT and CRA are both processes that analyze the energy levels that flows through every organ, gland, and cell in the body. Most of the time, energy imbalance is the cause of disease in the body. Deficiencies or imbalances lead to a breakdown in resistance or immunity and a loss of the ability to cope with environmental stresses. On the other hand, Epigenetics Functional Biochemistry is a science that allows us to test the biochemistry of neurotransmitters, hormones, the cardiovascular energy system, brain function, and other chemistry, utilizing non-invasive cutting edge testing.

After conducting these tests and receiving the results, I utilize the “Home Run Formula” to address nutrition, toxicity, structure/energy systems, and psycho-emotional stress in order to help improve your life. Utilizing these “four bases,” I analyze patients’ reflexes with a combination of healing modalities and devise a personalized program of care specific to each individual which includes: NET (Neuro Emotional Technique), bodywork, a dietary program including nutritional supplements and dietary supplements, and the exact nutrients you need to add to your diet in order to bring about balance and optimal health.

My ultimate goal is to help change your life by assisting you in reaching optimum health & wellness while providing the necessary resources to create a comfortable life and wellness routine that you enjoy. A life filled with happiness, everyday growth, good habits, and a healthy diet.
